Story

Dear Friends and Colleagues, As many of you will already know, I’m delighted to confirm that at just after 7.30 a.m on Thursday 20 June 2013, I reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This message is firstly and most importantly to say a huge thank you to everyone for their messages of support and the overwhelming, generous sponsorship I have received from friends and colleagues ; it is greatly appreciated personally and I know by the two charities and the individuals effected for whom it will make a real difference. Well, what can I say about the challenge in just a few words!?... There were five tough days of trekking which saw us move through ever changing scenery and climate before the summit attempt. This final push, however, proved to make the previous long days trekking seem like a stroll in the park. We finally reached the top of the mountain, at Stella Point at 6.30 a.m. Climbing by head torch light since 11.30 p.m. I can tell you that the yearning for sunrise was unbelievably strong (as was the wish for air filled with oxygen!). From the pictures now uploaded here you can see that the reward of the sun rising when reaching Stella Point was spectacular. We took a brief break and made the 45min final 150M ascent across the top of the mountain to the highest point, Uhuru Peak. Finally standing at 5895M, 19,341 ft. the aches , pains and fatigue disappeared....... the memories won’t. The week was full of jaw dropping views and our fair share of thrills and spills including several summit rescues due to the effects of altitude and a helicopter evacuation due to broken bones along the way! – but these stories can be kept for another occasion. As I’m proud to say is the case in my work and life, I was fortunate enough to be part of an excellent team who pulled together through each challenging moment and we all benefited from the strength of combined effort to reach our ultimate goal. It was a privilege to enjoy the experience and share it with some great people and equally a privilege to represent you and help raise funds for causes that mean so much to me and many others. Thank you once again. For you bro. X Paul
